There is a pervasive sense of place ... a vibe in the air ... that permeates certain sites and destinations, setting them apart from others. Inevitably, the historical significance, raw energy or emotional pull of these remarkable places leaves an indelible mark on one's psyche. Often, they are revisited through a sight, sound, smell, taste or touch triggered by the senses. The black granite memorial to Vietnam Veterans in Washington, DC; the now silent battlefield at Gettysburg; and Chandni Chowk, the bustling heart of Old Delhi, are three such evocative places.
